Aparatūra “Lotoss” poliuretāna plastmasas detaļu atliešanai kosmosā
2020
1980. gadā kosmosa stacijā “Salūts” pirmoreiz kosmonautikas vēsturē tika realizēts putupoliuretāna ieguves eksperiments mikrogravitācijas apstākļos, kura rezultāta tika iegūtas jaunas atziņas par ķīmiski tehnoloģisko procesu norisi kosmosā. Kosmosā tapa Maskavas olimpisko spēļu simbola lācīša figūra. Iekārtu "Lotoss", kas pašreiz atrodas Latvijas Ķīmijas vēstures muzeja krājumā, LPSR Zinātņu Akadēmijas Koksnes ķīmijas institūtā izstrādājis latviešu ķīmiķis, ķīmijas doktors, izgudrotājs un gleznotājs Arnolds Alksnis, un tā domāta polimerizācijas reakciju pētīšanai bezsvara stāvoklī.
From social stigma to family referent, boccia for a change on the way of thinking
2016
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the practice of Boccia (adapted sport) with children aged between 4 and 14 years old with cerebral palsy in rural India and the changes that this implies in social recognition and quality of family life. This study took place between January 2015 and February 2016. The research aims to fill the knowledge gap given the little information that exists on the importance of the context, specifically in the case of a family with a disabled person. This project is part of the "Family Centred Program" and is based on the use of a structured interview called Family Quality of Life McWilliams (FaQuOL). A statistical analysis using SPSS was conducted t…
Age and sex-based differences in functional strength of adults participating in Special Olympics
2022
Muscular strength is a critical component of physical health. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine age- and sex-based differences in functional strength and rates of referral for education in a large international sample of Special Olympics athletes. A total of 30,358 (male = 19,661) adult (20–69 years old) athlete functional strength records were utilized from the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes database. Descriptive statistics were computed for the following tests: timed sit to stand, partial sit-up, grip strength, and seated push-up. Analyses of variance with Fisher-Hayter pairwise comparisons generally supported age-related decreases in strength among both males and fe…
Association of poverty and social exclusion with body mass index among Special Olympics athletes in Europe.
2016
Objectives To examine the association of a risk of poverty and social exclusion (AROPE), age, and gender with the body mass index (BMI) status of European Special Olympics athletes. Methods BMI records were available for 1905 children and youth and 5517 adults from the Special Olympics International (SOI) Health Promotion database. AROPE was extracted from EU Eurostat statistics. Logistic regression analyses were used to predict BMI status. Results For children/youth and adults, respectively, 9.4 and 6.3% were underweight and 25.3 and 44.6% were overweight/obese. Being underweight was significantly associated with higher AROPE rates. Being female and lower AROPE rates were significantly ass…
Physical fitness of individuals with intellectual disability who have special olympics experience
2016
Physical fitness of individuals with intellectual disability (ID) is low compared to those without ID. Part of the mission of Special Olympics is to develop physical fitness. However, little is known about fitness levels of Special Olympics athletes. This study examined the fitness level of individuals who participated in Nordic Special Olympics Games 2008 in Finland. The sample consisted of 59 Special Olympics athletes (44 men, 15 women, age 16–45) whose fitness scores were compared to INAS-athletes (International Association of Sport for para-athletes with ID) and Finnish non-athletic individuals with ID. The fitness battery consisted of 8 items: BMI, sit-and-reach test, stork stand, sit …

Cerasola, D, Cataldo, A, Bellafiore, M, Traina, M, Palma, A, Bianco, A, and Capranica, L. Race profiles of rowers during the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. J Strength Cond Res 32(7): 2055-2060, 2018-Among the different factors affecting the outcome of elite rowing competitions, pacing strategy plays a relevant role. The purpose of this study was to analyze the race profiles of youth athletes competing at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games over a distance of 1,000 m. Environmental Conditions, Air Pollutants, and Airways
2019
Air pollution is a major problem worldwide, which could be even more serious for athletes who train in urban environments. Exercise increases minute ventilation and exposure to pollutants, but the literature on the effects of air pollution in athletes is relatively scarce, with the exception of chlorine exposure in athletes of aquatic sports and air pollution secondary to ice resurfacing in athletes performing in ice arenas. Although air pollution may exert detrimental effects on athletic performance, little has been published on this topic. The largest body of information regards the impact of air pollution during urban active transport, i.e., walking and cycling in cities, due to the pote…
A kinematics analysis of three best 100 m performances ever.
2013
The purpose of this investigation was to compare and determine the relevance of the morphological characteristics and variability of running speed parameters (stride length and stride frequency) between Usain Bolt’s three best 100 m performances. Based on this, an attempt was made to define which factors determine the performance of Usain Bolt's sprint and, therefore, distinguish him from other sprinters. We analyzed the previous world record of 9.69 s set in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the current record of 9.58 s set in the 2009 Berlin World Championships in Athletics and the O lympic record of 9.63 s set in 2012 London Olympics Games by Usain Bolt. The application of VirtualDub Programme …
